They feature reflective strips to maximize visibility in various lighting conditions, including low light and adverse weather conditions. These vests act as a visual indicator for helicopter pilots, assisting them in identifying the presence of HLOs and other personnel on the heliport.
The primary purpose of an HLO safety vest is to enhance the visibility of HLOs to helicopter pilots. Allowing for clear communication and effective coordination during landing and takeoff procedures. HLO safety vests comply with safety standards set forth by the CE directive 89/686/EEC regarding Personal Protective Equipment. This directive ensures that personal protective equipment, including safety vests, meet essential health and safety requirements for their intended use.
HLO safety vests adhere to the standards set by EN ISO 20471:2013 and EN 340:2003 for High Visibility Clothing. EN ISO 20471:2013 specifies the requirements for high-visibility clothing. That is intended to provide visibility of the wearer in hazardous situations. The standard categorizes high-visibility clothing into three classes, with Class 2 being an intermediate level.
